The Story
Evo Lite was developed as an Electronic Program Guide (EPG) software specifically tailored for low-end set-top boxes, where limited processing power and memory posed unique challenges. Our mission was to create a simple, functional UI that performed efficiently on these devices while providing an intuitive user experience. With heavy animations and complex visuals off the table due to hardware limitations, we focused on optimizing basic elements like colors, fonts, and simple images to create a realistic prototype that mirrored the actual user experience.
The Evo Lite prototype featured a straightforward design with minimal transitions. For instance, instead of animations like fading, we used timed appearances and disappearances to move between screens and menus. Highlights and navigation within the guide screen were designed to convey information clearly without relying on resource-heavy animations. We also added subtle fly-in animations for banners and transitions, injecting a sense of dynamism without overwhelming the device’s limited capabilities. By balancing simplicity with thoughtful design, we were able to demonstrate that even low-end set-top boxes could offer a seamless and visually appealing EPG experience.
