The Story
Evo 3D was an experimental UI prototype designed to bring immersive 3D animation effects to set-top boxes. The goal was to explore the possibilities of 3D interfaces on TV, creating a visually dynamic experience for users. I developed the prototype in Flash using Papervision 3D, incorporating features like poster list animations and cube transitions to showcase how 3D elements could enhance navigation and interactivity. While the concept showed promise, the set-top box hardware struggled to handle the performance demands, and the experiment was ultimately shelved.
Despite the project not moving forward, it was a valuable learning experience. I reused my 3D poster-list component from a previous project and set a benchmark for the engineering team to explore. Through this work, I deepened my understanding of 3D animations and honed my skills in Papervision 3D, an exciting new tool at the time. Though Evo 3D didn’t make it to production, the project demonstrated the potential of 3D UI on TV and provided insights for future explorations in set-top box design.
