The Story
The Video-On-Demand (VOD) project aimed to transform how users interact with large content catalogs on set-top boxes, tackling the complexity of navigating vast movie and TV show collections. Our team’s goal was to streamline access to relevant content and make browsing a more intuitive, visually appealing experience. By flattening the category hierarchy, we reduced the clicks needed to access content, making it quicker for users to jump into the catalog. The multi-line scroll design, with rows of posters stacked vertically, allowed for efficient browsing while minimizing performance issues on low-end hardware.
I contributed to this project by gathering customer requirements and developing multiple prototypes in Flash, refining the user experience across several iterations. Key features like curated content and express lanes for recent purchases or wish lists personalized the experience, while semantic search made finding specific titles, actors, or genres quick and easy. I also suggested context menus and in-place expansions, solving usability challenges within the constrained real estate of set-top boxes. Through collaborative design efforts and continuous user feedback, we delivered a simplified VOD experience that catered to user needs while optimizing performance.
